What happens if I setup JMS and everything is running good with a couple of slaves and everything. Then I find a great extension that I like, and want to share with my slave sites. Can I install to master and then select to install from master for the other slave sites?

YES this is effectivelly the way that you have to install an extension in a slave.
Start to install it in the master and after re-install it into the slave.
You can either use the JMS tool when the extnesion is defined or re-install the extension in the slave back-end
