just upgraded and with the latest version when going to check for updates the following error shows up:

SERVER_CONNECT_FAILED, failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found

all else appears to working

The error SERVER_CONNECT_FAILED is a message returned by joomla when it wants to install a package from an URL on internet.

Perhaps you have a temporary internet error to connect our server and download the updates.

I'm not sure if I'm following you: the check patches tables is all greens now but the check for updates link still only displays the above error

If you have downloaded JMS 1.2.9 and installed it before the "check for update", this is normal that all the "check patches" are green as JMS 1.2.9 include the patches definition 1.2.12.

I repeat that the SERVER_CONNECT_FAILED is an error because your hosting server is not able to connect our jms2win.com server to get the patches.
This maybe due to a firewall setting or apaches or PHP environment that does not allow communication outside.
