We have several sites setup in multisites using virtuemart, basically each site displays 1 manufacturer.

eg. site1 = nokia site2 = samsung etc etc

Using the virtuemart search module searches all products in the database across all manufacturers. Is there a way to limit the search to just 1 manufacturer or this could even be a category and its sub cats??

I don't know if VM provide such search module or plugin to do that.
You have to search in the VirtueMart website to see if you can restrict the search to a specific category.
Otherwise, you have to develop a specific module and perhaps also plugin to do that.

Ok, I'm not a programmer but I have managed to tweak mod_virtuemart_advsearch.php to do what I want for 1 site. For each site I need to change 1 word in the mod_virtuemart_advsearch.php, however multisites duplicates the module across all sites

Is there a way (can you help or develop) to get each site to have its own unique version of the same module??

Tony normally the module is not duplicated but is shared between the websites except if you selected that you want to "copy" the "/modules" directory (that is not recommended).

I don't know what you did to filter the search in this module but for your information, it is alway possible to know inside PHP if you are runing under a slave site or the master and also to know the JMS site ID.
So perhaps you could have a specific setting in your specific module that would use different values depending on the slave site ID.
