I have in a slave site the following:
/tobi/multisites/klewis/images/stories showing in the joomla back-end.
but I can't see the folder when I connect per (FileZilla) FTP. I couldn't also create the directory using FileZilla. No permission. I think JMS also can't write to (update) the directory once it has been created. Do I need to change a setting?

I suppose that the images directory is a link to the master images directory.
Some server and therefore FTP client, does not allow to follow the Symbolic Link to their physical place.

Check that you have the apaches "Options +FollowSymLinks"
I suppose this parameter is already enabled if you are able to access your slave sites.
Try to upload an image with Joomla media manager and I think it will works event if you FTP tool does not have the autorisation.
