I am having an issue. Whenever I create a new slave site the url root/multisites/slave1

it never takes me to a fresh install page. it only mimics the homepage of my current site. all links are broken of course. what am i doing wrong

If you always have the master website displayed, check that you have correctly created the slave site (success without any error).
Check that you have correctly written the domain name (perhaps with www and without www).

Which version of Joomla are you using ? 1.6.x or 1.7.x ?
Which version of JMS are you using ?

I am trying to allow our chapter organizations to create their own websites on our server. The chapter sites will be in sub directories.

I want to share the Jomsocial db on our master site with each of our individual chapters.

My host allows symbolic link. When I attempted to install the site pursuant to the tutorial I get a blank screen. I do not get to an Joomla Installation. See here:

When following your link, we didn't get a blank page but a "404" error page.

A blank page is generally the symptom of a PHP fatal error.
In this case, you should have an error log file in your server that should provide you more information on the reason of the error.

You can also check the permission of the files and folders to verify that you can have access to the slave site directory.
You can for example install the "hello.php" into the slave site "deploy folder" to verify that you have access to the subdirectory.
