I have watched the videos and followed all the steps but am running into a problem when I try to create slave sites that don't share the same directory as the master (No configuration file found and no installation code available. Exiting...)

I've attached an image of the Cpanel setup and an image of the Site Manager for you to see the DNS mapping - there seems to be some misalignment and I can't understand why.

I've checked with my host if symbolic links are allowed, and the response was:

"Symbolic links should work fine on the account as long as you are not trying to connect to files that are outside of the script's document root. This would cause issues with the Open_basedir protections on the server."

I'm not sure how this all fits together. I can continue working within the master directory for now, but it would be great to understand what I'm doing wrong for future work.

If you have the open_basedir that is set to something, this can effectivelly be a problem when you are trying to deploy a slave site into a directory that is not in the path defined in the open_basedir.
You can see the value of the open_basedir when you executre a "phpinfo" or go in the joomla help menu to see the system info (in joomla 1.6, this is in the site menu).
There, you can get the PHP Information and search for the 'open_basedir'.
If you have a specific value, you can try modifying your setup to remove the open_basedir.
Sometimes, this can be done in a php.ini file present in your root directory.
Or perhaps with a .htaccess to try modifing this value.

I'm able to create slave sites quite comfortably within in one domain after a week of practice. I'm now venturing into add-on domains.

If my document root for the master is: domains/main.com/subdomains/master/public_html
what would the document root be for an entirely new domain with and without symbolic links? (Please illustrate both)

Page 24 of the technical guide has the master as:

/jd/subdomains/master/public_html

Then it has the domain as jd/domains/jms2win.org/public_html.

I can't understand tbis setup, and I'm not sure if page 22 is supposed to be the same example because there isn't an actual "master" subdomain...

I think I'm missing an important part of this logic.

Ok, I had an epiphany and it all makes sense.
