Is it possible to have subfolders with symbolic links which are pointing to a master installation? So that I have independent sites and only one Installation? Is it absolutely necessary for this scenario to have subdomains.

I tried this installation and everything seems to work like it should by using a template and replicate the master mysql db into another db. Everything works fine, no permission problems. The new db, system links etc., all installations were done.

But by calling up the the domain/subfolder I get the old master site. No new site, no possibility to log in on the new site.

Where is my error in reasoning?

YES you can have subfolders using Symbolic Links.
This is the scenario that is presented in most of video.

You can use the Symbolic Link in all type of slave sites:
- Sub-folder
- Subdomains
- Domains

If you get the master website instead of the slave site, this perhaps related to a wrong slave site domain spelling.
This is case sensitive.
Ensure that you write correctly the URL and that you have correctly defined the domain name in the "manage site".

If you are testing on a local PC, see the specific procedure with "localhost" as explained in the user's manual chapter 9

Hey, that was the crunchpoint. Knowing that problem I have had previously changed the first letter from upper-case to lower-case from the subfolder because not to get in trouble.

I changed it even for the deployed directory.

But that wasn't the whole solution. After your hint I checked the "config_multisites.php" and for some reason it was still in upper-case. After I edit it manually it works.

thank you for support
