I am hosted on siteground.com. I have the template done, and a new sub domain which I set up in my CPanel first. brown.southshoreba.com. But when i go to the new domain all I get are the index of / page which shows Parent directory and cgi-bin in the list.

Also, when I go into Tools>Brown>Folders and Files> I do not have _installation as in the tutorial that I have watched several times.

What have I done wrong?

If you have an index of directory that is displayed, this mean that means that the "document root" is probably not the one that you expected.

I don't know if your objective is to install Joomla with a master in the subdirectory.

As you mentionned cPanel, I suggest that you have a look in the tutorial video 0.d that show how to install joomla, how to install JMS Multisites to have your master and also how to create subdomains for the slave site.

So either verify the "document root" path provided to the subdomain in cPanel or if this is a slave site that you want deploy, verify that you specify the correct path.

If you don't know the path corresponding to the subdomain, you can install the "hello.php" that will display it on screen.
