If we purchase a membership, what exactly does that get us? I understand the patches and updates, but is this only for the current version? If so what about newer major versions? Do we get a discount on future versions? How much? j

This is exact you can get the update in the same version. When there is an upgrade of version, we provide a discount coupon to existing customer and the value depends on how long time you have the previous version. We consider the discount = 0 after 1 year between the purchase date and the date of promotion that we send to the existing customers. So the discount value is variable.

On average how long is it in between major versions? When is the next version supposed to come out.

It is difficult to say. The "Article Sharing for JMS" and "JMS Multisites" have more than 1 year. We have ideas for JMS Multisites that we would like develop next year but we have plenty of existing extension that we have to make compatible with Joomla 1.6. This require a lot of time. Sorry but we can not comit on an average or an upgrade frequency.
