Normally, you can already start with joomla as 1.1.4 should be able to re-apply "old" patches in the latest joomla.
The procedure consists in the un-install of the JMS patches.
You don't have to un-install JMS completly.
Once the patches are removed, you can upgrade your joomla to J1.5.14.
When done, you have 2 choices.
Either you decide to keep JMS 1.1.4 and just re-install the patches
or you can install the JMS 1.1.24 over the current JMS 1.1.4.
Once you have JMS installed, you can re-install the patches.
As you are in production, it is better to have a good backup.
Personnally, when I have to do such thing, I gnerally backup everything and restore it locally on a PC to test the procedure and be sure that I don't discover side effect (something forgotten).
When restored on a localhost, you can simulate your production domain with a special procedure that you will find in the JMS 1.2.x manual. (Identical in JMS 1.1.x).
The slave site definition will not be removed.
All the JMS files and DB connection will remain correct except the master website configuration.php file that will be restored with the backup that were performed the first time you have installed JMS.
So you can backup also the root "configuration.php" files of your master website - to be sure be able restore all its configuration.
