NO this is not the same.

/images is the default name used by Joomla and most of extensions.
If you create affiliate website that copy or share this directory, this mean that you will have to manage it specifically.

If from the begining you ensure that specific images are stored in a specific new directory created for that, then in the future, it will be easier to identify this material.
So the idea is to have 2 directories
- One for the shared content
- One for the specific content.

Where does this images_specific directory reside, in the master site, or in each slave site directory? And in my slave directory, Multi Sites created a images symlink directory. If I need to make the images_specific directory in the slave directory, how do I need to remake all of my article image links, or can I just assign the new image directory for that slave site in Multi Sites, somewhere?
