Newbie stands corrected.
I extracted it as you said and it installed okay.
Now it's asking about installing patches, I'll have to figure that out.
I'm trying to fix all permissions errors etc. but I accidentally got out of "Site Manager" and can't see how you get back into it. I don't see it listed under plugins or modules.
Do I just fix the permissions errors and then install the patches - and that will make the patch errors go away?
How do you get into "Site Manager"?

I see that when you start to unzip the extension into a directory that works.
If that was not the update timeout (after a restart of the server to be active), perhaps that was a problem with the upload size.
Concerning the JMS "check patches", you should have the list of files that must be displayed.
The patches directly modify the Joomla PHP files.
When all the patches will be installed, you should have a "OK" beside each files modified.
The "Site Manager" is used to create the slave sites.

Okay now my problem is getting past the "check patches" section which I guess is now what I'm realizing is where the real installation of this module happens.
First off, I had deleted my "installation" director as Joomla tells you to do when you first install. I had to copy an installation directory from another server to get the patches to even begin to go in that section.
This patch thing is obviously big - is there any manual anywhere on this? The JMS installation manual says hardly anything about this part.
Every time I run the apply patches I get more errors about patches that are not "ok" - and sometimes ... a blank white screen.
I would happily go through each of these but the messages I get are unclear - such as:
The routing wrapper is not present in this MASTER configuration file.
The install "template" does not contain the patch that allow the installion of a template into a specific folder
The usage of specific themes folder is not present in the module management
From what you were saying I figured that the patch installer would fix these - it fixed some but not anywhere near all.

Well, I just tried installing Multi Sites on my BlueHost.com account (a US web hosting company) - and the "Check Patches" worked perfectly. So I'm wondering now if there's something I could have installed improperly on my Linux box or with Joomla?
I'm wondering if I just have a bad install of Joomla or Linux and should update or reinstall something.

Okay, Thanks so much for your patience.
I did a complete re-install of Joomla 1.5.15 and JMS Multi Site - this time every patch patched properly except this one:
installation
Not OK
* File or directory not writable.
Please check file/directory permission before applying the patches.
* Directory found but missing index.php
Actions:
* Restore the directory
The trouble is that when you put the index.php back into the Installation directory - then Joomla won't run at all. How can I fix this?
